We celebrate Black History Month during the month of February. This originally started in 1926 as Negro History Week in honor of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass. In 1976 the U.S. Government began to recognize it as Black History Month. America uses the month to recognize the many African Americans that made a difference in U.S. history. These are the stories of 4 individuals that worked past obstacles and struggles to find success in history. Tiger Funding wants to help you work past obstacles to help your business succeed with business loans for bad credit.

1. Stephen Smith

Stephen Smith was born into slavery. He worked in the lumberyard. But, when he was 21 he purchased his freedom for $50. By 1822 he had established his own lumberyard. In 1857 he was worth the equivalent of what would be $13.5 million today. What sounds like a great success story becomes even more powerful when you hear of the opposition that Mr. Smith faced. Even after buying his freedom life was not easy for him. His work as an abolitionist caused some in the community to hate him. At one point unknown individuals destroyed his office and records. However, he didn’t let that keep him down. He rebuilt and found prosperity again. He found constant opposition as he worked to bring light to the abolitionist movement, but did not give up.

Takeaway for entrepreneurs: Building a business will not always be easy. You might not face opposition as serious as Stephen Smith, but you still need to push through and not give up. If you need working capital to grow your business and are being turned down by traditional lenders due to bad credit, try Tiger Funding. He married a slave on the neighboring property and was able to eventually purchasing her freedom, before purchasing his own. He became a saltpeter and in total purchased the freedom of 16 family members. McWorter was the first African American to develop a town.

Traditional lenders have strict requirements for obtaining a loan and many small business do not qualify, especially if you have bad credit. Clara Brown established a successful laundry business and used her proceeds to invest in real estate. She also helped other freed slaves to start over. Clara Brown never gave up looking for her family. She was reunited with one daughter almost 50 years after being separated.
